Chelsea must continue to fight for new objectives in the upcoming season in the top flight. The Blues from London do not wish to fall into obscurity, and instead look to compete well next season. However, beyond just depending on the seniors of Chelsea from last season, their youth is also an important contributor.
To enhance the overall strength of their squad, Chelsea took a Spanish gamble this summer. While most would look at the first team of FC Barcelona to secure a top signing, the London-based club instead chose to look deeper into the canvas of Barça’s youth and plucked away a talented young striker.
Aged just 18 but built to fight even the most gladiator-like defenders, Marc Guiu became the acquisition that Chelsea took away from FC Barcelona. However, despite the initial concerns and skepticism about whether or not he would even be an important addition, the latest outing from the player could suggest something special.
As highlighted by Spanish source Mundo Deportivo, the 18-year-old Marc Guiu impressed in his first outing for the 2021 UEFA Champions League winners. In a friendly outing against Ryan Reynolds’s Wrexham FC, Guiu made his debut and came out as a potential man-of-the-match candidate.
While the 2-2 scoreline is hardly a flattering one for Enzo Maresca’s men, it is still just early steps into the preseason. For Guiu, however, it was a chance to dispel the skeptics and fight for his place in this new-look Chelsea that the arrival of Maresca will undoubtedly bring about.
Beyond providing an assist to Christopher Nkunku, despite being somewhat unintentional, Guiu displayed the traits that caught Chelsea’s eye in the first place back when he was still a part of Barça’s youth and during his occasional first-team cameos.
Beyond his strength and physicality, Guiu’s retention of the ball and a keen eye for goal make him the perfect kind of fit for a relentless place like the English Premier League. While there remain rumors of a potential loan for him, Guiu is gradually showcasing that perhaps he does deserve more opportunities after all.
