Manchester City’s Potential Starting XI for the 2017/18 season

Date:

It has been a busy summer of transfer activity for Manchester City so far with a host of new players arriving at the Etihad Stadium. The likes of Ederson, Bernardo Silva, Kyle Walker and Danilo have been added to Pep Guardiola’s squad from Benfica, AS Monaco, Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid respectively as they look to improve on their performance in both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League next season.

However, despite already spending a huge sum of money this summer, it would not be a surprise to see further additions before the end of the transfer window. We have taken a look at how City could potentially be lining up next season.

Goalkeeper: Ederson Moraes

City signed the 23-year-old keeper in June from Benfica for a fee of around £35 million. Guardiola has not had much success with goalkeepers so far as Claudio Bravo failed to impress as a replacement for Joe Hart. It is hoped that Ederson, who won the Portuguese league and cup double last season, will be the answer to this problem.

Right-Back: Kyle Walker

Walker is likely to be City’s first choice right-back next season after joining the club from Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur for an initial £45 million. The likes of Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna had left the club this summer so a new addition was most definitely needed. The 27-year-old was selected in the 2016/17 Premier League team of the year as he impressed in his 31 league appearances for Spurs last season.

Centre-Back: John Stones

John Stones was criticised heavily last season following his big-money move from Everton last summer. He made 27 appearances for City following his £50 million and did have some shaky moments. However, under the guidance of Guardiola, he is only going to get better and this is likely to be a huge season for the England international.

Centre-Back: Nicolás Otamendi

Otamendi is another defender who has been criticised since joining City for a fee of around £28.5 million from Valencia two years ago. However, his performances for the club did start to improve last season under Guardiola. The 29-year-old made 30 appearances for the club last season and he is likely to be a key part of Guardiola’s plans for the upcoming season as well.

Left-Back: Benjamin Mendy

City are reportedly on the verge of breaking the transfer record for a defender yet again in this transfer window. They have reportedly agreed on a fee of more than £51 million to secure the services of AS Monaco defender Mendy. The 23-year-old France international was a key part of Monaco’s success in both Ligue 1 and the UEFA Champions League last season and will be a superb addition to Guardiola’s squad for the upcoming campaign.

Central Defensive Midfielder: Fernandinho

The 32-year-old Brazilian international has been one of City’s most consistent performers since joining the club in 2013 from Shakhtar Donetsk. He does a superb job of protecting the back four and has been rated highly by Guardiola since he joined the club. He has made 131 appearances for City so far and will be looking to build on that tally once again with the addition of some silverware next season.

Central Attacking Midfielder: Kevin De Bruyne

Since joining Manchester City from Wolfsburg two years ago, De Bruyne has done nothing but impress in a City shirt. He has made 61 appearances for the club so far, scoring 13 goals. At just 26-years-old, he still has time to improve even further and is likely to be a key player for City again this season.

Right Midfielder: Bernardo Silva

Silva became Guardiola’s first signing of this summer as he was snapped up in a deal worth around £43.5 million from AS Monaco in May. He was one of Monaco’s key players last season as they impressed throughout the season, providing them with a creative spark. He is likely to suit Guardiola’s style of play and could flourish next season if he quickly settles into English football.

Left Midfielder: Alexis Sánchez

The 28-year-old has been linked with a move away from Arsenal this summer, with Manchester City among a number of different teams reportedly interested in securing his services. It looks more and more likely that he may leave the Emirates. He scored 24 goals for the Gunners last season and would be an outstanding addition to City’s squad if they could pull it off.

Striker: Kylian Mbappé

A deal for Monaco’s 18-year-old wonderkid Mbappé is highly unlikely. However, he could be allowed to leave the club this summer if Monaco’s £120 million asking price is met.

Whether Monaco would be willing to sell to Manchester City for the third time this summer, remains to be seen. If Mbappé does decide to leave the French outfit this summer, it looks more likely that he will choose to move to La Liga giants Real Madrid.

Striker: Sergio Agüero

There has been much speculation about the 29-year-old Argentinian striker’s future this summer, despite his huge success during his time at the club. He has scored 122 goals in 181 appearances for Manchester City, going down as one of, if not the best striker in their history.

However, there has been speculation over the last summer that he is not Guardiola’s ‘cup of tea’ and may be allowed to leave the club this summer. However, Agüero is a world-class striker and it would take a huge fee to result in him leaving the Manchester City.
