3 Players Tottenham Should Sign to Retain the 2nd Position

For the last two seasons, Tottenham Hotspur ended up amongst top 3 in the league. The Lilywhites played some excellent football, but don’t have anything to show for it. Indeed, it could be argued that the Wembley outfit played the best football in the league in the last two seasons, but couldn’t capitalise in the crucial moments.

And now, with Manchester City running away with the league, there is no chance for Pochettino and his men to secure the title this time. Third-time lucky isn’t happening here. As of now, they are 21 points behind Guardiola’s men, and there is a better chance for humanity to find concrete evidence of extraterrestrial life than anyone else beating City to the league title this season.

As a result, it would be wise for Spurs to target a hat-trick of second-placed finishes in the league. They are only separated by 6 points to second-placed Manchester United—and here are 3 players that could help them close the gap.

Dani CeballosDani Ceballos

This is actually something that Tottenham should try to do. It is not as though the Lilywhites lack numbers in midfield. What they do miss, however, is someone creative in midfield. While Mousa Dembele is regarded as the creative hub, he simply can’t be classified as one.

He is more of a powerful box-to-box midfielder with astute dribbling skills that allow him to burst forward. However, he lacks the vision a creative midfielder has—something that Dani Ceballos has in abundance.

Indeed, in Ceballos Spurs would have a player that has BOTH dribbling and passing abilities. Last season, he was the joint-third in dribbling charts with 2.7 successful dribbles-per-game in La Liga, behind only Lionel Messi and Neymar.

In him, Spurs would have a player who not only drives forward with precision but also someone who could unlock defences with his creativity. And since he is not getting many minutes at Madrid, he could be brought, at least on loan.

Timo WernerTimo Werner

It is an open secret that Spurs rely heavily on Harry Kane to do the scoring and they often lack the brutality in the final third with his absence. As a result, they need to sign someone who could take the workload off Kane and do some of the scorings for Spurs.

Timo Werner could be that player. The German is young and has bags of talent. Not only that, he is already a good player that can score at least 20 goals a season. All of this aged just 21—and given Spurs’ ability to groom players, he could be their next Kane.

Justin KluivertJustin Kluivert

A midfielder, a striker and now a winger-forward. These are the three places where Tottenham could really strengthen, and at this point of point of time, Justin Kluivert looks like the best prospect in that regard.

The son of the legendary Patrick Kluivert, Justin can play on either wing and has an uncanny ability to make magic in the final third. Despite being only 18, he is now a first-team regular at Ajax and has scored 5 times this season, while also assisting twice in 14 appearances.

Signing him would not only add quality instantly but also let Tottenham have a player with the potential to be one of the very best.
