Liverpool is set to win their first-ever Premier League title this season. The Reds sit a staggering 18 points clear at the top of the table, with all their rivals seemingly uninterested in the title race. Although they are the best team in Europe, Liverpool still has several areas in the squad that could be improved.
Their first XI is exceptional, however, their squad depth does not live up to that same standard. January offers the Reds the chance to ensure they have enough squad depth for the title race, in case one of their star players get injured.
Here are three surprise signings Liverpool could make this window.
Todd Cantwell
Despite being rooted to the bottom of the table, most neutrals have thoroughly enjoyed watching Norwich City this season. The Canaries have been daring in their approach, with Daniel Farke refusing to ‘park the bus’ in any of their matches so far.
Instead, the German wants to attack and press from the start, with Todd Cantwell being the centrepiece of that approach. The English youngster has stolen all plaudits alongside Teemu Pukki for Norwich’s entertaining attacking football.
The 21-year-old has directly contributed to 8 PL goals in 1457 minutes this season. Many have compared the attacking midfielder to a young Frank Lampard in reference to his late runs into the box from deep. Cantwell’s movement has been exceptional, proving that he is PL quality.
Klopp’s current Liverpool team is made up of an expansive front three, robust midfield and competent defence. Cantwell’s attributes would be perfect for a Liverpool midfield that relies mainly on work rate, movement and quick passing to the front three.
Ben White
The Brighton defender has done exceptionally well this season. Although on loan at Leeds, Ben White has caught the attention of England’s elites with Chelsea and Tottenham also monitoring the youngster. The 22-year-old has thoroughly enjoyed his time under Marco Bielsa, starting 28 games this season.
Despite being a defender, White has tendencies to play short passes and likes to dribble out from the back. Jurgen Klopp already encourages his defenders to be confident & expressive on the ball, so they can dominate possession.
As they showed against Arsenal in the FA Cup, Leeds are a team heavily focused on possession, so White will seamlessly slot into Klopp’s Liverpool side.
Jadon Sancho
There’s no top club in Europe that isn’t interested in the services of Jadon Sancho. The English wonderkid has caught everyone’s eye with his sensational performances for Borussia Dortmund. This season alone, the 19-year-old has scored 12 goals and provided 13 assists in just 24 appearances. Since arriving in Germany, the ex-Manchester City player has directly contributed to 59 goals (25G,34A). Such numbers put him amongst the best in the world.
Jurgen Klopp has had Sancho under his radar for quite some time now. The youngster fits the mould of his attacking philosophy. He’s a pacey, explosive, agile, tricky and hard-working winger that would comfortably adhere to Klopp’s gegenpressing style.
