Jose Mourinho’s reign at Tottenham has gotten off to a great start having secured three wins out of three games in all competitions, and managed to put Spurs on the right track to sneak into the top four over the next six months.
To maintain a great level of success going into the second half of the Premier League campaign here are three things Jose Mourinho needs to fix at Tottenham;
Control
One thing Tottenhham has struggled with ever since Jose Mourinho took charge of the club, and even before the Portuguese tactician arrived, is their ability to maintain control and dominance for the entirety of a matchup.
Jose Mourinho has led Spurs to three victories on the bounce, and in all three wins, Tottenham struggled to maintain their dominance and ‘be the bigger side’.
For instance; in the win at home to Bournemouth, Spurs started the game on a high note, but you could tell that mid-game, the team lost its grip on the game and as a result, gave Bournemouth a chance to claw their way back into the tie.
Thankfully, the game still went in Tottenham’s favour, but the game’s final result could have turned out very differently had Bournemouth been more decisive.
Going forward, Jose Mourinho needs to make his side capable of maintaining their dominance for the entirety of games if Tottenham are to have a realistic chance of making it into the top four.
Concentration Levels
This, to a large extent, goes hand in hand with Tottenham’s inability to maintain their dominance for the entirety of a 90-minute game.
It is because Spurs struggle to maintain peak concentration levels throughout a game that they tend to give their opponents a chance to potentially make a comeback, as we saw in the games against West Ham and Bournemouth.
This is uncharacteristic of a Jose Mourinho side, as the Portuguese tactician’s previous teams were known to have an ‘elite mentality’ to the point where they would only ‘switch off’ on rare occasions.
So far Spurs have ‘switched off’ in every single game they have played since Mourinho took over. This needs to stop going into the second half of the season.
Over-reliance on Individual Brilliance
Tottenham’s key players are turning up for the team, which, of course is a good thing – however, despite the decent results, Spurs don’t appear to be a completely cohesive unit, which is understandable, considering the team still has to adjust to Jose Mourinho’s tactical philosophy.
Tottenham are currently compensating for this lack of cohesion by relying on the likes of Dele Alli and Harry Kane to produce the goods.
Jose Mourinho needs to completely instill his tactical philosophy in his Spurs side and have a definite team selection
