Despite acquiring two high-class signings in the form of Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof, Manchester United have not replaced the ageing Michael Carrick in this transfer window. Even though he has just been named the new club captain and impressed for the majority of last season, the soon to be 36-year-old does need replacing but who could replace this club legend?
5Nemanja Matic, Chelsea
Manchester United lodged a bid for the Serbian in June but have heard nothing back from the Premier League Champions. This was because Chelsea were getting nowhere in the transfer market themselves.
But that was until they struck a £39.7 million deal for the Monaco midfielder Tiemoué Bakayoko. This would allow a move for Nemanja Matic who possesses the calmness that United need to make the rest of the midfield tick over.
Having worked with Mourinho before and possibly finding himself out of favour at Stamford Bridge could mean he does make a move up north. However, having missed out on Lukaku to The Red Devils, Chelsea would be hesitant to sanction a move to their Premier League rivals.
Fabinho would be the ideal recruit in this position
I agree with Nainggolan and Dier, but Kroos is impossible, maybe Nemanja
