5 Players Chelsea Should Target in Summer

Although the season started with much promise, Chelsea’s weaknesses have becoming glaringly obvious to everyone. If Chelsea is to push on with Frank Lampard as the manager, they must address the weaknesses he’s pointed out in the summer. A narrow 2-1 win over Tottenham will only paper over the cracks as this squad will not be good enough to compete with the league’s best next season.

Here are 5 players Chelsea should target in the summer window.

#5 Moussa Dembele

Mousa Dembele

The Frenchman is one of the hottest commodities in Ligue 1, having scored 14 goals in 25 appearances this season. He’s the third top scorer in France and Chelsea are quite scarce for goals at the moment. Despite Tammy Abraham having a great debut season, the Blues have scored the least of anyone in the top 4, they need goals desperately.

#4 Jose Gaya

Jose Luis Gaya

Although Emerson and Marcos Alonso are competing over the left-back spot, it’s clear that neither is good enough long-term. Frank Lampard is a coach that demands more than defending from his full-backs, he requires them to contribute to build-up play too. Jose Gaya is a tireless LB that has the composure to make the right decisions in the final third as well as possessing the positional play to avoid getting caught on the counter-attack.

#3 Timo Werner

Timo Werner

As he proved in the Champions League last week, Timo Werner can score anywhere he wants. This season, the 23-year-old has scored 25 goals in 33 games. The most impressive trait about the German is that he’s not just constraint to being a goalscorer, he can play in any of the front three positions.

Werner has the intelligent movement and physical attributes to excel in the Premier League. With the likes of Christian Pulisic, Mason Mount, Jorginho and Mateo Kovačić behind him, Werner would have all the service he needs.

#2 Dean Henderson

Unfortunately, the world-record signing of Kepa Arrizabalaga has been an utter and complete flop. The Spaniard has created more negative headlines than good and has seemingly given Lampard no other choice than to drop him for the 38-year-old Willy Caballero.

Dean Henderson who is on loan from Manchester United has been exceptional in a Sheffield United shirt this season. He’s kept 9 clean sheets out of 26 appearances and only conceded 22 goals. Henderson would be a homegrown player and welcomed addition to Stamford Bridge.

#1 Jadon Sancho

There will be no player more sought after in the summer than Jadon Sancho. The Dortmund winger has set the Bundesliga alight with stunning performances, this season the 19-year-old scored 15 goals and provided 16 assists in just 29 appearances.

Such a productivity rate will be hard to find anywhere else around Europe. The youngster will solve Chelsea’s goalscoring problem from the wide flanks as none of the Blues current wide players has scored more than 5 goals this season. Jadon Sancho is premium English talent and the only player close to challenging Kylian Mbappe in that 19-22 age bracket.
