We’re only a few games into the 2017/18 season and Manchester United are already looking like champions elect. Why’s that? Well, the main reason is that José Mourinho seems to finally be extracting the best out of the £90m-rated Paul Pogba. On his day, the Frenchman is an asset that would strengthen any team in the world, however, last season he didn’t play like such.
But this season we’ll see why he’s worth every penny of his steep price tag. He holds the key to United’s title challenge for several reasons, here are some.
1He now has defensive cover
The main thing that held Paul Pogba back last season was José Mourinho’s insistence on him doing excessive defensive duties. In an unbalanced midfield, Paul Pogba had to contribute attacking wise as much as he did defensively. Mourinho saw the errors of his ways and recruited Nemanja Matić to sure up the midfield.
The Serbian will act as a shield in front of the back four, meaning Paul Pogba is no longer restricted, allowing him a free role in the attack. At Juventus, the Frenchman excelled in an MF 3 with Arturo Vidal and Andrea Pirlo, Pogba was the most advanced of those 3 and his amazing exploits were there for all to see.
