Manchester United made their long awaited return to Champions League football under the management of Jose Mourinho and got off to a winning start with a 3-0 win over FC Basel at Old Trafford.
There are plenty of lessons to be learned from this match, especially for Mourinho’s side who will want his team to play at a quicker tempo to punish teams who sit back as much as Basel did. As for Raphaël Wicky, he will be pleased with his side’s performance on their return to the competition but will know that their matches against United will not decide his side’s destiny.
2Romelu Lukaku continues his fine goalscoring form
It has taken the 24-year-old no time whatsoever to settle into life at Old Trafford since joining from Premier League rivals Everton earlier this summer for a hefty fee. He has already found the back of the net four times in the Premier League and opened his account in the Champions League in tonight’s game.
He got the killer goal shortly into the second-half as he converted Daley Blind’s cross with a thumping header. It certainly was not the Belgian’s best performance in a United shirt, but as long as he continues to get himself on the scoresheet, he is unlikely to care. He could be a huge player for United this season in all competitions and has really transformed them into a much stronger team.
