Goalkeeper David De Gea could finally get his first start of the season when Manchester United face arch-rivals Liverpool on Saturday evening, Sports Courant reported.

The legendary shot-stopper was omitted from the squad for all the four matches United have played in the season thus for not being mentally fit due a lingering transfer saga that fell through on transfer deadline day. However, Louis van Gaal has now indicated that the goalkeeper could find his place in the playing XI against Brendan Rogers’ side on Saturday.

“His head is empty now, and that is important. He can focus. But we have to judge him in training,” Gaal told MUTV.

Just hours later, it was confirmed that De Gea has signed a new four-year contract that will keep him at Old Trafford till 2019.

The Dutchman further disclosed that he was always sure that De Gea would stay at Old Trafford even though he came to within touching distance of sealing a switch to Real Madrid.

“I am very happy that David De Gea stays because I believe he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. He was my best player last year, not only chosen by the fans but also by the players.”

“Yes, because it is confirmation of what I am always saying, that transfers are a process. I had hope until the end,” he said.

Manchester United has started goalkeeper Sergio Romero in all four matches they have played this term thus far. The Argentine international, who received a barrage of criticism following club’s 2-1 defeat to Swansea recently, admitted he is ready to fight for a starting berth at Old Trafford this season.
