The rain-hit first Test between Pakistan and Sri Lanka at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium ended in a draw on Sunday.

The result was widely expected after the play of only 91.5 overs was possible in the first four days due to drizzle and bad light.

The hosts managed 252-2 in reply to the visitors’ first innings total of 308-6 declared, thanks to unbeaten centuries from Abid Ali and Babar Azam.

Abid struck 109* to become the only batsman in the history of the sport to have score a century on both Test and ODI debuts. The 32-year-old right-hander had struck 112 against Australia in on his debut ODI in Dubai in March this year.

Babar scored 102* to register his third Test century and second in the last five innings.

Pakistan’s innings began on a poor note as Shan Masood was caught by Dinesh Chamdinal at cover off pacer Kasun Rajitha for nought.

Skipper Azhar Ali scored a sluggish 36 before being dismissed by paceman Lahiru Kumara.

Earlier, resuming their innings at 282-6, announced declaration soon after Dhananjaya de Silva finally brought up his sixth Test ton in the morning session.

The 28-year-old right-hander, playing his 28th Test, drove paceman Mohammad Abbas for his 15th boundary to reach three figures.

For Pakistan, pace duo Naseem Shah and Shaheen Shah Afridi bagged two wickets apiece.

The second and final Test will be played at Karachi’s National Stadium from December 19-23.
