Can Wolfsburg Stun Real Madrid Once Again?

Date:

Wednesday night hosted the pick of Champions League results as we witnessed a relatively surprising 2-2 draw for Manchester City in the midst of their injury woes, but the result that left football fans around the world baffled beyond one’s imagination was the Wolfsburg v Real Madrid game.

In the build-up to the Real Madrid game, Dante said that he believed Wolfsburg had somewhat of a 2 percent chance of knocking Zidane’s men out of the Champions League, but by the looks of things Wolfsburg have gotten far more than they bargained for.

The Volkswagen Arena was plunged into a wave of ecstasy when Rodriguez converted a controversial penalty to put Wolfsburg in front, from that moment onwards, it seemed like Madrid were losing the plot as they were somewhat stunned by what was happening.

Most would argue that Zizou and company were overconfident going into the Wolfsburg game due to the fact that they secured a win in the Clasico against Barca in their last La Liga outing.

But the plain fact is that Wolfsburg were met with a little bit of luck in the opening stages of the all-important encounter. And considering how well Madrid started out in the game, a win for the Spanish giants seemed like the only viable result but after Rodriguez slotted home the penalty things started going downhill for Real Madrid.

From the onset, Wolfsburg were limited to pumping the ball into Madrid’s half of the pitch due to Madrid’s great spell of dominance in the first 15 minutes of the tie while hoping that Drexler would be able to conjure up some chances.

The decisive blow was inflicted by a well-worked team effort which was tapped-in by Maximilian Arnold, from that point onwards it was clear that the first leg was already lost for Madrid.

Although If nothing, Madrid were expected to grab an away goal at the very least and the failed to do so, putting them in an unpleasant situation when they travel back to the Bernabeu in six days.

But lest we forget, the Bernabeu is one of the hardest places to play in, and Wolfsburg will have to work extremely hard to see off the game when they travel to Spain.

Despite the 2-0 win which raised some eyebrows, Wolfsburg will rue their missed chances as their tally on the night could’ve been three or four considering how many chances at goal they were presented with.

But now after a stunning first-leg display by Wolfsburg in front of their fans, everybody is definitely wondering if Wolfsburg can come out with this type of result at the Bernabeu.

What’s in store for Wolfsburg at the Santiago Bernabeu?

Wolfsburg have proven that they aren’t pushovers following their first-leg exploits against Real Madrid and with the way things panned out in that encounter I think it’s fair to say that they already have one foot in the Semis.

Although Madrid are quite capable of bursting Wolfsburg’s bubble at the Bernabeu, if Dieter Hecking and his players keep their wits about them then the Champions League Semi-finals will be a certainly for them.

The prospect of an El Clasico Champions League final is still somewhat looming with Barcelona and Real Madrid not out of the competition yet, but Wolfsburg might just be the team that stops Madrid from reaching the final this season.

Ronaldo looked absolutely distraught after the first-leg, so we can only assume that he’ll be keen on getting a couple of goals against Wolfsburg.

Well one thing’s for sure, and that’s the fact that Wolfsburg are going to be faced with a barrage unlike any other with Real Madrid keen on overturning the two-goal deficit at the Bernabeu, But Wolfsburg goes into the game knowing that the Champions League Semi final spot is now within their approach.
