With both Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane taking it in turns to be injured, Real Madrid have been continually calling upon the services of Nacho Fernandez. To be fair to him, he’s done a respectable job, but he still needs a competent 4th choice defender to help him. Real Madrid are the current La Liga and European Champions; such a status requires the squad depth to match. If Los Blancos are to retain their titles, they must sign adequate defensive reinforcements in the winter window.
Here are 3 defenders Real Madrid should try to sign in January.
3Shkodran Mustafi
The German was all but set to join Juventus last summer, but a last-minute twitch changed plans. Arsène Wenger breathed a huge sigh of relief when that happened as the 25-year-old is integral to his defensive solidity. He may be rash in his tackling and sometimes inept in decision-making, but there aren’t many defenders available that would do a better job than Shkodran Mustafi at the Bernabéu.
For all his faults, the German is still a very committed defender that puts his all into protecting his goal. In the right defensive system, Mustafi is a competent defender that’s good in the air, great at initiating attacks and solid in 50-50 duels. Shkodran Mustafi would be a cheap but easily acquirable signing for Los Blancos in January.
