With both Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane taking it in turns to be injured, Real Madrid have been continually calling upon the services of Nacho Fernandez. To be fair to him, he’s done a respectable job, but he still needs a competent 4th choice defender to help him. Real Madrid are the current La Liga and European Champions; such a status requires the squad depth to match. If Los Blancos are to retain their titles, they must sign adequate defensive reinforcements in the winter window.

Here are 3 defenders Real Madrid should try to sign in January.

Since Zinedine Zidane took over at the Bernabéu, Real Madrid haven’t made one Galactico signing. In fact, the focus has been on youth and academy players to bolster the cohesion of the squad. The signing of Alessio Romagnoli would only enhance that trend. The 22-year-old is one of the most highly respected young defenders in all of Serie A, but the good thing is, he’s not overhyped.

The Italian always seeks to drive out from the back with the ball as he’s extremely confident in taking players on. He’s a defender that helps relieve his team of pressure, as they can always rely on him to travel up the pitch in tight spaces. On top of that, his anticipations skills are incomparable as he often senses danger before his teammates. That way, he’s able to adjust his positioning to minimise threats. The Italian would probably cost Real Madrid a sizeable price tag, but in today’s market, he’d still be a bargain.
