Champions League Round-Up Tuesday

Date:

Barcelona and Bayern became the latest teams to qualify for the knockout phase of the Champions League when Other clubs weren’t so lucky.  However, they do have another chance in the final round in two weeks. Let us have a quick look at what happened in Champions League on Tuesday night.

BATE vsBATE vs. Leverkusen 1-1

BATE opened the game with an early goal after only two minutes. Volodko found Gordejchuk on a left side, and Gordejchuk’s attempt finished between the legs of Bernd Leno. The goalkeeper made a terrible mistake and gave the lead to the home team. Leverkusen was in control of the match since then and managed to equalize on the 68th minute after Mehmedi’s cool finish on Calhanoglu’s assist. The Germans had a few more goal scoring opportunities, but the home team held them to a draw. Both sides have the chance to qualify for the next phase.

Zenit vs

Zenit vs. Valencia 2-0

Zenit was already through before the game, and many thought they will not be so motivated against Valencia that needed a good result. However, the Russians defeated the visitors in style. Oleg Shatov opened the scoring after 15 minutes and Artem Dzyuba sealed the victory 16 minutes before the end.  To finish even worse for Valencia, the young defender Ruben Vezo was sent off in the 80th minute. The Spaniard must win the last game against Lyon at home.

Arsenal vsArsenal vs. Dinamo Zagreb 3-0

Arsenal took the major step forward and their hopes to qualify for the knockout are still alive after a routine win over the Croatian side. Ozil scored the first goal after a great ball from Alexis Sanchez in the 29th minute. The later found himself on the score sheet twice, the Chilean scored Arsenal’s second only four minutes after the opener and settled the final result 20 minutes before the final whistle. Dinamo was very poor. The Gunners still need a win at Olympiakos to progress.

Bayern vs. Olympiakos 4-0Bayern vs. Olympiakos 4-0

Another great performance from Guardiola’s boys. They crushed the visitors and controlled the match even after Badstuber’s red card 8 minutes after the interval. Douglas Costa was the quickest to respond to the rebound following Boateng’s shot and gave a lead to the Bavarians after 8 minutes. Lewandowski showed his poacher’s ability once again with a goal in 16th minute. Muller scored another goal four minutes later and at that point it was pretty clear who’s going to win this game. The man of the match Kingsley Coman set the final score after 69 minutes. Olympiakos offered almost nothing except for a few attempts from the set pieces.

Lionel MessiBarcelona vs. Roma 6-1

Barcelona simply demolished the Italians and recorded first ever win against Roma in Champions League. The hosts were in control from the very start and braces from Suarez and Messi, along with Pique’s tap-in proved to be devastating for the visitors. Adriano scored the sixth goal after a rebound following Neymar’s missed penalty. Edin Dzeko also missed the chance to score from the penalty spot but managed to snatch a consolation goal in injury time. Roma has to win home against BATE and hope that Leverkusen won’t defeat Barcelona in the last round.

Porto vs. Dynamo Kiev 0-2Porto vs. Dynamo Kiev 0-2

A minor surprise was seen at Dragao where Dynamo outplayed the home team and deservedly won the game. The Ukrainians desperately needed a win here and delivered it with perfection. They were the better side in every segment. Dynamo took the lead from Yarmolenko’s penalty after 35 minutes. Before the leading goal, the visitors had two great chances, but the post saved Porto. Rebrov’s team opened the second half nicely, and Derlis Gonzalez scored the second one on the 64th minute. Now, Dynamo will need a home win against the weak Maccabi to go through.

Maccabi vsMaccabi vs. Chelsea 0-4

Probably the worst team in CL couldn’t resist mighty Chelsea, and Gary Cahill scored on a rebound after Rajkovic saved his header. The goalkeeper prevented the visitors from scoring a few more goals with some excellent reactions. The former Chelsea player, Tal Ben Haim, received a red card after 41 minutes and at that moment we could predict a final result. Willian scored another superb goal from a free-kick and proved that he is currently the best player in Mourinho’s team.  Oscar scored a third for the Blues, and Kurt Zouma settled the final score with a header in added time.

Lyon vs gentLyon vs. Gent 1-2

Probably the brightest surprise of this year’s competition celebrated a victory in Lyon. The home team opened the scoring with an excellent finishing by Ferri after only seven minutes. Milicevic scored a fantastic curler from the free-kick to even the score. From that moment, it was anybody’s game because Lyon needed a win to stay in contention for the next phase. The home team was slightly better in the second half, and almost everybody thought that game will finish 1:1 when late substitute Kalifa Coulibaly rose above Lyon’s defenders to snatch a historic win for the Belgian champions. He met the cross from the corner in the 95th minute, knocking the home team out of the competition.
