Chelsea’s Dimming Champions League Hopes

Date:

Chelsea looked to be on the verge of a season revival following a 3-0 victory against Crystal Palace last time out, but Wednesday night’s result apparently begs to differ as they had to settle for a 2-2 draw against Tony Pulis’s West Brom.

The Blues failed to capitalize on Tottenham’s loss to Leicester City to gain pace with the team’s around the top four spot, but surely Hiddink will still be confident that they can do the implausible.

Diego Costa looked extremely fed up and frustrated with the game against West Brom as Chelsea’s season just can’t seem to gain stability.

The possibility of Stamford Bridge outfit playing Champions League football next season appears to be fragile, but they are not completely out of it yet. It’s somewhat unlikely considering the fact that Chelsea have been inconsistent all season long but a mercurial winning run would most definitely get them amongst the top four at the end of the season.

The January transfer window is still wide open, and reigning Champions could bring in a Marquee signing that could change the dexterity of the entire team, Alex Teixeira looks like Chelsea’s primary target as the Brazilian superstar has enjoyed a spectacular season sharing a similar goal tally with the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Aubumayeng.

Although this seems like the most unlikeliest of occurrences for the Blues, Chelsea could secure Champions League football next season if they manage to win the elite competition this season.

That would mean a repeat of 2012 which saw them go on to win the trophy against all odds while finishing 6th in the league that season. But for that to happen, Chelsea will have to see off the challenge Paris Saint-Germain, of one of world football’s most in-form clubs.

The Blues have faced PSG in the Champions League in the last three seasons, but now the Ligue 1 giants go into this one as strong favourites. However, Chelsea could actually muster up a match-winning performance in the tie.

As slim as Chelsea’s Champions League chances may seem, mathematically it is still a possibility but Hiddink and his men won’t stop trying.
