Gonzalo Higuain was exceptional in another Serie A season, enjoying a phenomenal goalscoring spell as he topped the goal charts with a record breaking 36 goals in just 35 league appearances, making him one of Europe’s most prolific strikers in the 2015-16 season.
Despite Juventus’ spell of dominance in the domestic league, the Argentina international still managed to help Napoli to a 2nd place finish with a points tally of 82.
The goalscoring machine has expressed some interest in joining Liverpool despite the Reds not having European football to go along with their Premier League campaign next season.
Liverpool missed out on Champions League qualification via the Europa League when they succumbed to a 3-1 defeat in the Europa League final against Sevilla earlier this month.
Liverpool boast of the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Danny Ings, and Christian Benteke in their arsenal and occasionally Firmino when Klopp opts to play the Brazilian as a false 9.
Sturridge is arguably the best amongst Liverpool’s striking options with Benteke hardly coming up with anything spectacular, and Ings out injured for most of the season (he’s just returned to full fitness).
Higuain is a proven goal scorer which is something Klopp needs in his Liverpool side ahead of the next season to bolster their chances of bringing the Premier League trophy back to Anfield in the midst of a never-ending sabbatical from the Merseyside ground.
In recent times, Liverpool seems to have gotten their defensive structure right, but their strike-force doesn’t appear up to the task in terms of spearheading a viable title challenge next season.
It’s quite obvious that Liverpool haven’t been able to fill in the void left by Luis Suarez ever since he completed his move to Barcelona. With Higuain interested in making a switch to Anfield, Jurgen Klopp should explore the possibility of signing the Argentina international before somebody else does as his 36 goals are unlikely to go unnoticed by Europe’s elite clubs.
Higuain is a gifted attacker and judging by his tremendous qualities he’ll almost certainly fit into the Premier League and more importantly, he’ll fit in with Liverpool’s eccentric style of play.
Contrary to what many might think, the Serie A is on par with the Premier League in terms of difficulty rather It’s even tougher when the league’s physicality comes into question as most Italian teams have a stringent defensive mentality which has been the case for many decades.
Higuain currently has just two years left on his Napoli contract after joining the club in 2013 from Real Madrid for 34 million pounds.
Could Higuain bring the Premier League trophy to Anfield
Higuain is an explosive striker with loads of pace and immense proficiency in front of goal. He also possesses great technique alongside a natural goal scoring instinct.
Even in his days as a Real Madrid player, Higuain was known for being a prolific goal scoring machine as he partnered with Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo up front.
The 28-year-old has an incredible ability to create chances and provide goal scoring opportunities while moving into channels. He’s also quite deadly in the 18-yard area judging by his goal scoring exploits last season.
Now to the topic at hand – Liverpool came close to winning the Premier League in 2013, but they agonisingly slipped towards the end of the campaign, leaving the window open for Manchester City to eventually win the title.
One of the key factors in Liverpool’s title challenge in the 2013 season was none other than Luis Suarez. Even though Sturridge played a key role, it was Suarez that spurred their campaign.
Higuain has the potential and ability to spur Liverpool like Suarez did a couple of seasons ago. He’ll fit in quite nicely with the likes of Coutinho and Firmino, who will be available to offer him the needed support to hit the back of the net on a consistent basis.
Seemingly, the missing piece in Liverpool’s attack is a marquee striker such as Higuain. So, Klopp will do well to follow up on his interest and make him Liverpool’s most significant acquisition.
