Newcastle United have been one of the better teams in the Premier League over the last three seasons. Under Eddie Howe, they have moved from being a relegation-threatened club to a top 8 club in the Premier League.
The Magpies have been very smart in the transfer market, not going for big names but rather trying to build a project. That trend looks set to continue this season as well as Howe looks to alleviate some of the issues he faced last summer.
Injuries played a cruel part in dismantling Howe’s project last season, especially in defence. Having to play in the Champions League as well did not help the cause with the extra pressure crippling a wafer-thin squad.
Understandably, the club is keen to take corrective measures this season. One player that the Magpies have shown immense interest in signing is Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi who is coming off an excellent Euros with England.
Speaking about his future as quoted by reliable Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, here is what Palace chairman Steve Parish had to say
“Nobody has got to the valuation yet. If you want a superstar player you need to pay superstar money. It’s not near the point where we have to make a decision. He’s a generational talent!”
Not words any Newcastle United fan will want to hear but Parish is correct. Guehi is one of the best young defenders of his generation. He has already established his credentials on the biggest stage for England in the Euros.
If the Magpies are keen on signing Guehi, they need to make a financial offer that is hard to resist. It does look like they have the player’s blessing for a move this summer but convincing the Eagles is not going to be easy.
Crucial decisions need to be made by the Newcastle board as they also cannot afford to violate the PSR rules of the Premier League. Let’s see if they can reach an arrangement to sign the 24-year-old this summer.
