Decision To Loan Out Young Striker Can Haunt Chelsea

Date:

It’s been a busy summer of transfer activity at Stamford Bridge. There have been more outs than ins. The signings of Nicholas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku were designed to rectify the lack of strikers at the club. One striker who was signed last term, David Fofana from Molde, has been loaned to Union Berlin.

Fofana, who only made a handful of appearances for The Blues last term, can count himself unlucky to be shipped off on loan.
With the signing of Nkunku, logically Ivorian Fofana will have less game time, but in the short time he was given last term he did ok.
It wasn’t the 20-year-old’s fault that the team was so unbalanced. Natural wide players Sterling and Mudryk for example both struggled badly last term, but Fofana has become the sacrificial lamb for a poor recruitment strategy.
The wide player problem went further than Raheem Sterling and former Shakhtar player Mudryk. Chelsea were spoilt for choice and couldn’t settle on a preferred formation.
Last season there was a lot of chop and change due to the scattergun approach in the transfer market. In this window, Todd Boehly and co have tried to not only balance the books but balance the squad too.
Players such as Kalidou Koulibally, Cesar Azpilicueta, N’Golo Kante, Matteo Kovacic and Edouard Mendy amongst others have been moved on by Chelsea.
Those departures arguably could be justified as the West London club in those positions are well stocked.
At the time of writing, American winger Christian Pulisic is close to leaving the club too and Hakim Zyech as well.
The need to mention this is, that Chelsea having bought a lot of players last year, are paying the price. Too many players are getting sold too quickly, there’s no direction in their transfer strategy. The departure of David Fofana, I am adamant is an example of this.
Nkunku and Jackon are talented players, but to allow a player who has some Premier League experience in Fofana to leave is a bad decision.
Both Frenchman Christopher Nkunku and Ivorian Nicholas Jackson will need time to settle in.
With Armando Broja due to return from a long injury lay-off, it can be argued to Chelsea’s forward line although talented, it’s inexperienced at this level.
David Fofana is the most experienced forward they have at the club and he’s the youngest! Let’s hope not, but I feel this decision will come back to bite as Fofana did ok when called upon last season.

  1. very correct cos players didnt perform too well in the team as a poor ball distribution from the mid field, we are really lacking midfielders and the chelsea board should really do something about it, not just midfielders, a ball holding midfielders that distribute the ballcan really

    • Thanks Andrea 🙂 . Who do you think they should get? Maybe Rabiot on a free is worth a punt?
