One of the biggest stories of the summer transfer window saw Diego Costa attempting to force a move away from Chelsea after he was frozen out of the squad by Antonio Conte. It was made clear from the start of the saga that the Spanish striker wanted to return to Madrid to play for Diego Simeone’s Atletico side.
His Chelsea career isn’t something that should be forgotten in a hurry as he scored 52 Premier League goals in just 89 top-flight games. His impact at Stamford Bridge was fantastic, and he quickly became a fans’ favourite in West London with chants of “Diego, Diego, Diego” from the Shed End ringing around the ground every other weekend for three seasons.
He only managed seven goals outside of the league and just two in the Champions League, but there were plenty of brilliant finishes during his spell in England, whether they were from five yards out or 25 yards. We look at his best five.
1Chelsea vs Arsenal (5th October 2014)
In one of Costa’s first London derbies, he didn’t disappoint as he helped his side to a 2-0 victory over Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal. It came courtesy of another brilliant 50-yard assist from Fabregas where the striker took the ball under the control 20 yards out before lifting it fantastically over the onrushing Wojciech Szczesny. This was one of his first English games, and he first made a name for himself in this game due to his hard work and commitment.
Southampton 0-2 Chelsea (30th October 2016)
This is undoubtedly one of the favourites for Diego Costa’s greatest goal in a Chelsea shirt, and you will struggle to find a better goal from the centre-forward. The two-time Premier League champion received the ball on the left side of his body 25 yards out before switching it onto his favoured right foot. After taking one touch to get the ball out of his feet, he unleashed a great curling effort into the far corner which left Forster with absolutely no chance. He loved a goal in fixtures the Saints, and there won’t be many arguments against this one as his best goal in the blue shirt.
