Newcastle United United have had an impressive couple of seasons in the Premier League. Ever since their takeover went through in 2021, the club has turned over a new leaf and become a force to reckon with.
One of their first signings of the new era was Bruno Guimaraes. They signed the Brazilian defensive midfielder from Olympique Lyon in Ligue 1 and he has gone on to establish himself as one of the best in his position in the world.
In terms of ability, Guimaraes is right up there with the likes of Rodri and Declan Rice. He might not have hit the same heights as the previous two yet but with another couple of seasons, he should be as good as them.
Incidentally, Man City and Arsenal have been linked with a move for the 26-year-old for quite some time now. Both clubs have known that it would be difficult to convince Newcastle United to sell him but they have not stopped trying.
Now, Guardiola’s men have been handed a direct blow in their pursuit of the Magpies star. Speaking in an interview as quoted by reliable Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Guimaraes has made his intentions clear that he would love to stay at Newcastle.
“I’m very happy at Newcastle, I never said I would like to leave! I always said I would like to put my name in the club’s history. I can’t wait to do my best for the club and the fans”
Guimaraes currently earns £200,000 per week on a contract at Newcastle that runs until 2028. He is one of their best-paid players and is adored by the fans. There is no reason for the player to consider leaving Eddie Howe’s team.
The Brazilian is too good a player to play second fiddle to either Rodri and Rice at City or Arsenal. Instead, he gets to be the protagonist of a team that is primed to challenge for trophies in the coming years.
Transfermarkt values the 26-year-old at around €85m. If Newcastle were to even entertain a sale for him, they would likely demand a nine-figure sum. Guimaraes however has effectively shut the door with this message and Man City can forget signing him, at least during this transfer window.
