Amadou Onana – Everton’s Midfield Star Nears Aston Villa Move

Date:

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana is close to signing a long-term deal with Aston Villa for around £50 million. Usually, I would say this was a long-term deal in the making, but honestly, I am a bit surprised.

The 22-year-old Senegalese-born Belgian international has been a revelation since joining the club from Lille in 2022 for around £30 million.

Onana’s loss will naturally be a big loss for The Toffees, who had become somewhat of a fan’s favourite since joining the club.

Strong, quick, physical, and with a good eye for a pass, Amadou Onana could be a jewel in the crown for The Villains. Especially with Douglas Luiz leaving the club, Onana appears to be a ready-made replacement. It seems like a win-win for Villa as they have a like-for-like player, and they have not had to break the bank for him. This is a good deal financially for Everton, as they have been trying to align with FFP rules for some time. Still, having said that, the sale of Onana (once completed, will be a huge blow).

Yes, The Toffees are well-stacked in midfield, but the Senegalese born-forward offers something different. The other Everton midfielders do have their own skills that they bring to the table, but not the tenacity that Onana possesses, which the other Everton midfielders don’t really have.

This sale allows the Merseysiders to reinvest in the rest of the squad and address areas such as attack, which has been a weakness for The Blues.

With the greatest respect to the 14-time English title winners, keeping a talent of Onana’s calibre will always be challenging in this current era. Amadou Onana was linked with Manchester United, Arsenal, and Bayern Munich. Strong rumours were circulating that The Gunners wanted to sign the former Lille man, but nothing came of it. Bundesliga giants Bayern were said to be in line to sign Onana, but news has since emerged that Villa high-jacked the deal after the 22-year-old midfielder stated his preference to remain in England.

Some will say that Everton’s loss is Villa’s gain, but if both sides play it smartly, both teams could benefit from this deal. The Toffees’ fans eagerly await his arrival at the Goodison Park club.
