The Bundesliga is still a few days away from kicking off, yet the 18 teams that make up this season’s German top-flight have spent a considerable sum. The league has averaged nearly £2 million spent per player. Borussia Dortmund currently lead the way with player recruitment, as the club attempt to close the gap on Bayern Munich. However, Bayern have also strengthened well, as have many of the other teams that will be making a run at European qualification this term.
Sports Courant looks at the five Bundesliga must watch transfers.
3. Andre Schurrle – Borussia Dortmund
Andre Schurrle burst onto the Bundesliga scene in 2009 with Mainz as an exciting winger and his subsequent move to Bayer Leverkusen continued his rise as one of Germany’s top young players. However, his transfer to Chelsea seemed to come too early, as he spent most of his time coming off the bench in the Premier League, but since returning to Germany, he has managed to get his career firmly back on track. A move to Wolfsburg in 2015 provided him with more opportunity, and last season Schurrle tallied nine goals in 29 games – a fantastic return. His £26.9m move to Dortmund now makes him the club’s most expensive transfer purchase. But at only 25 years of age, Schurrle seems worthy of that price and has plenty to offer Dortmund. The team’s high-intensity style should suit him perfectly.
