The Bundesliga is still a few days away from kicking off, yet the 18 teams that make up this season’s German top-flight have spent a considerable sum. The league has averaged nearly £2 million spent per player. Borussia Dortmund currently lead the way with player recruitment, as the club attempt to close the gap on Bayern Munich. However, Bayern have also strengthened well, as have many of the other teams that will be making a run at European qualification this term.

1. Mario Gomez – Wolfsburg

After three unspectacular seasons away from Germany, Mario Gomez has returned, signing with Wolfsburg from Fiorentina. Last season’s loan spell at Turkish side Besiktas was exactly what Gomez needed after failing to produce goals in Serie A. Twenty-six goals in 33 matches helped Besiktas win the Turkish Cup. If Gomez can tally at least half the goals he did in Turkey, then Wolfsburg’s £5.95m will look like one of the wisest transfers of the summer.
