It has been a productive summer of transfer activity at Blackburn Rovers so far this summer as they will be looking to bounce back to The Championship at the first attempt under the management of Tony Mowbray following their relegation last season. Blackburn are one of the biggest clubs in League One and should be right up there challenging for promotion next May.
Mowbray has made several signings so far this summer with the likes of Marcus Antonsson, Paul Caddis, Bradley Dack, Peter Whittingham, Dominic Samuel and others all arriving at Ewood Park. It would be no surprise to see Mowbray strengthen his squad even further before the transfer window slams shut at the end of the month.
Rovers did not get their 2017/18 League One campaign off to the best start last weekend as they fell to a 2-1 defeat away at Southend United. However, they will be looking to get their first three points of the season this weekend at home to Doncaster Rovers.
We take a look at five players who could play a vital part in the upcoming season for Rovers in their quest to earn a spot back in the second division at the first attempt.
5Peter Whittingham
The 32-year-old’s arrival at Ewood Park earlier this summer was seen by many as a huge coup for a League One side. Whittingham had been a huge player for his former club Cardiff City over the last 10 years or so and it was, therefore, a surprise to see him drop down a division. He made over 450 appearances for the Bluebirds, scoring 96 goals in the process.
Cardiff manager Neil Warnock respected the fact that the midfielder wanted to be guaranteed first-team football at this stage of his career and subsequently sanctioned the move. Rovers were able to pick him up on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract at Cardiff.
