With Dwight Gayle reportedly set for a move back to The Championship and now is the time that Newcastle United start looking for players who can possibly replace the striker. The 26-year-old had a superb season last time out as he scored 23 goals in 34 league appearances as he finished top scorer in The Championship and helped his side claim the title.
Newcastle do have other options in the final third such as Ayoze Perez, Joselu and Aleksandar Mitrovic, but they will still need to fill the void that will be left by Gayle’s departure. The forward has bundles of pace and energy and also is a lethal finisher in front of goal. However, despite having such amazing abilities, he has not been given enough chance to impress at St James’ Park in the top flight.
We take a look at five possible replacements.
5Divock Origi
There is no doubt that Rafael Benitez will be looking to find a quality replacement for Gayle if he decides to leave the club before Thursday’s deadline and the 22-year-old Liverpool striker would be just that. The forward looks set for a move away from Anfield due to Jurgen Klopp’s ongoing pursuit of AS Monaco forward Thomas Lemar.
As it stands, it appears that Tottenham Hotspur is Origi’s most likely destination, but there could be many twists and turns before the transfer window slams shut. Benitez may be able to persuade Origi to join Newcastle in what would be a sensational coup for the club. One reason why he might opt for Newcastle is that he would be guaranteed first team football whereas at Tottenham he would have to compete with the likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min for a place in the starting line-up.
