Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez exceeded expectations during the 2017-18 campaign, as a good run of form late in the season helped to secure a tenth-place finish in the Premier League table. The attack certainly needs to improve, and the Magpies must add reinforcements in the coming weeks.
The Toon scored only 39 goals through 38 matches, and much of those struggles were due to inconsistency at the striker position. Dwight Gayle was unable to produce the same numbers from his time in the Championship, while summer-signing Joselu did not have much of an impact in his first year on Tyneside.
After spending the second half of the term on loan at Fulham, it would be a genuine shock to see Aleksandar Mitrovic back with United.
There will be options during the summer transfer period, and several strikers could potentially help Newcastle find their scoring touch once again.
Bas Dost – Sporting CP
Rumoured to be a target for several years at St. James’ Park, Bas Dost could finally be poised for a move to Newcastle.
The Dutch international is set on a transfer this summer, following issues with management at Sporting CP.
A consistent goalscorer in both Portugal and Germany during his career, Dost may be the right fit for Benitez’s system.

Mario Balotelli – unattached
Considered a risk by many after multiple problems at past stops, Mario Balotelli could be ready for a Premier League return with Newcastle.
The 27-year-old forward is coming off two productive seasons in Ligue 1 with OGC Nice and would be available on a free transfer.
Benitez has been able to manage big personalities before, and Balotelli still has the skill to grab goals in bunches.
Joshua King – AFC Bournemouth
It took some time for Josh King to find the right setting to showcase his talents, but he has been a stellar striker for AFC Bournemouth. With that in mind, the Magpies may feel that they can’t afford to miss out on signing him this summer.
It would not be cheap, and Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has never been one to spend massive amounts. However, the 26-year-old would likely thrive on the front-line for Benitez’s side.
Josh King has shown the quality to be a Premier League star, and the former Manchester United academy product could be eager for a new setting.
Andrej Kramaric – Hoffenheim
While Andrej Kramaric may not have succeeded with Leicester City recently, his abilities will definitely be tempting for Newcastle this summer.
The Magpies are reportedly interested in his services, after another strong season with Hoffenheim.
There will be competition for his signature, but Andrej Kramaric may bring that creative spark in the final third that Newcastle desperately need at the moment.
Yoshinori Muto – Mainz 05
Staying in the Bundesliga, another potential target may be found at Mainz 05 in the form of Yoshinori Muto.
The Japanese international is keen on a move to the Premier League, and Newcastle would like to add a player that would be able to frustrate opposing defences.
Clever on the ball and able to take on defenders directly, Muto’s addition is an intriguing option for the club.
