After a season of disappointment and progress at the same time, Manchester United have already strengthened their side with the additions of Fred and Diogo Dalot but how can Jose Mourinho set up to really challenge rivals Manchester City?
Here’s a look at Manchester United’s likely starting XI for next season.
David De Gea, Goalkeeper
He is the first name on the team sheet and a vital player for Manchester United. He won the Golden Glove last season and will want to grab another Premier League medal to add to his 2012/13 one. Ed Woodward and co will have to spur the advances of Real Madrid again. Is that fax machine still broken?
Antonio Valencia, Right Back
The captain had another successful year at right back despite starting out as a right winger when he joined United. He is the best option for United at the moment and is solid in defence. With Diogo Dalot joining the club this summer, Valencia will be used to nurture this talent as his replacement.
Eric Bailly, Centre Back
Bailly is clearly the best centre-back at the club. He is quick, strong, robust and has a never say die attitude on the pitch. He epitomises a typical Mourinho defender, and he will be hoping to continue the good impression he has on the Manchester United fans.
Raphaël Varane, Centre Back
Varane is obviously not at the club, but he could be the signing United need at the back. With Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Victor Lindelof and Marcos Rojo not living up to the standards that Old Trafford require. Varane is a stylish defender, and with Real Madrid expected to reshuffle their pack, he could be one to leave the Santiago Bernabéu.
Luke Shaw, Left Back
Despite Ashley Young having a brilliant season last year, Shaw offers a better outlet. He has struggled under Mourinho, but with a lack of interest in the transfer window for him and Manchester United believing their targets are overpriced they should put faith in Shaw. He has impressed the fans when given his chance, but he has to impress Mourinho more than the fans.
Nemanja Matic, Centre Midfield
The cool, calm and collected midfielder had a superb season for The Red Devils and is expected to carry that on next year. He is the lynchpin who dictates the tempo for his side, and he is a vital cog in the side.
Paul Pogba, Centre Midfield
A huge season is ahead of the Frenchman as he embarks on his third season back at Old Trafford. He improved last season and showed he could perform when needed especially against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. However, he needs to step it up another gear if he wants to get a Premier League medal with the red side of Manchester.
Fred, Centre Midfield
Fred could be the missing link to help bring the best out of Paul Pogba. He can pick out a key pass, works tirelessly and has a biting tackle to help defensively. He cost Manchester United £47 million, and many will have high expectations for the 25-year-old.
Jesse Lingard, Right Winger
The 24-year-old has finally come into his own. A solid season last year has merited a place in the England squad where is trusted to do the job for his country. He can play out wide and can also tuck in behind the striker which gives him a dynamic edge over other options.
Romelu Lukaku, Centre Forward
The Belgian striker has had a superb debut season for his new club after netting 24 goals in all competitions. He is strong, quick and knows where the back of the net is. If he sorts out his first touch, he could lead United to the title next season.
Marcus Rashford, Left Winger
Despite making 51 appearances in all competitions, he has not been able to nail down a starting spot for his club. He scored 13 goals for United last season and has raw pace that can punish any defence that he faces. He is trusted by his England manager Gareth Southgate but not so much by Mourinho. He faces competition with Alexis Sanchez, but this year he should be trusted to start for his club.
