Manchester City have become one of the most successful teams in recent years thanks to the high standard they have set for themselves. Every year, despite winning titles season by season, the Citizens have remained hungry for even more glory. With Pep Guardiola leading the charge at Manchester City, it hardly comes as a surprise.
However, another thing that Man City have been notoriously connected to is spending absurd amounts of money to always stay one step ahead of the competition. Ironically, however, the Manchester-based club always seems to be unfairly singled out for spending so much simply because they are the ones who are reaping the fruits of their investments.
Other major clubs have also spent a lot of money during the last few years, but their investments have not resulted in too much success for them. For this reason, much of the media’s attention mainly goes towards Manchester City and their expenses.
Recently, with the reports that clubs like Manchester United and Arsenal are also spending a lot of money to improve their squad, Pep Guardiola took the chance to highlight the hypocritical nature of the media to only shun the Citizens for their spending, as highlighted by Fabrizio Romano:
“Many years they have done it (spend money), many years, but it’s not news… It’s just when City spend money.”
When asked if he was concerned about this spending from his rivals, Guardiola confirmed that it was definitely something that made things more difficult for Manchester City:
“Of course, I am concerned for many years how good they are because every year they are better and better. You see Arsenal playing at the same level as last season. I saw the game against Leverkusen, they are on fire… Every year looks more difficult. United will be back, you know? They bought players.”
Ultimately, Guardiola is certain that the goal of all this investment is to take away the legacy and prestige that Manchester City have currently built for themselves and have retained so consistently: “Everyone wants the crown that we have had for four years.”
For Guardiola and his boys in blue, the next challenge in the official season will be the Community Shield final in a few hours. Taking on FA Cup winners Manchester United, it will be a local derby after all that will decide who gets to lift the first title that is available at the iconic Wembley Stadium.
