What Jermain Defoe Will Bring to Bournemouth

Date:

Since Sunderland’s relegation to the Championship, the question has always been where will Jermain Defoe move to? Well, it looks like he’s all set for a move to AFC Bournemouth.

Defoe was one of the real stars for The Black Cats last season, and you could see the passion he played with to avoid relegation this year. That commitment and determination helped him get his place back in the England fold, a real honour for a proud Englishman.

Despite his advancing years he managed to convince Gareth Southgate he was still capable of hitting the back of the net. The England manager will also be impressed with his commitment to the cause as he has become a vegan in a bid to gain a better understanding of his body and develop discipline.

His loyalty has also prevailed this year making him a Sunderland favourite. He easily could have moved last summer as they avoided relegation with Sam Allardyce in charge and many would not have been surprised if he moved in the January transfer window with his side languishing near the relegation zone once again. However, he chose to stay and fight for his side.

This will be his second spell with Bournemouth having already played for them on loan (from West Ham United) in 2000-01. During this season he managed to score 18 goals in 29 games and scored in 10 successive games which led to much praise from his then West Ham manager Harry Redknapp. Do not be surprised to see a hero’s welcome when he plays his first game at The Vitality Stadium.

Despite a 9th place finish, their highest top-flight position, the south coast side will want to keep progressing, and their strike rate could be improved.

Admittedly they were involved in some great goal scoring affairs this season but the only player to get double figures this season was Josh King. They relied heavily on him.

Jermain Defoe would be a perfect addition to the side because he brings a wealth of experience with him that would aid the development of several of their strikers. Players such as King, Benik Afobe and Callum Wilson should benefit significantly.

The former Tottenham striker broke the news during an England training camp as they prepare to play Scotland in a World Cup Qualifier.

He was asked about the move to see if it was going to go ahead and he replied with only positive news for Bournemouth fans as he confirmed that he had undergone a medical at the club.

This signing makes so much sense, and Eddie Howe will have to be congratulated for moving so quick with this transfer.

Jermain Defoe already has over 100 Premier League goals in his career and looks like he will be adding a few more to his 158 next season as he attempts to overtake Robbie Fowler (who has scored 163).

Alongside Asmir Begovic, Bournemouth have added Premier League experience and quality to an already impressive outfit. Next season should be a season of joy for Howe and co.
