With the Season in full swing, many Liverpool supporters have felt short-changed where transfer dealings are concerned, seeing a deal agreed for Georgian International goalkeeper, Giorgi Mamardashivili and Italian wide man, Federico Chiesa being the club’s only senior incoming business of the window.
A Left-footed centre-back, a controlling number six, and an alternative left-back option were all on supporters’ wish lists, however, Richard Hughes, seemingly decided that no deals were available for the right quality, Martin Zubimendi aside, with the Spaniard having opted to remain at Real Sociedad.
With the Summer window now closed, Liverpool boss, Arne Slot, can turn his entire focus to matters on the training ground and the pitch, however, the hard work continues for the Merseysiders recruitment team.
One player who has attracted interest from a whole host of clubs including Liverpool, as highlighted by Sunderland Echo, is 17-year-old Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg. The Reds are closely monitoring the rapid development of the English gem.
In an interview with BBC Radio Newcastle, Tony Mowbray, former Sunderland coach, heavily praised the English gem and highlighted that he has a ‘warrior-like character’:
“He is this warrior-like character, a personality and internal mechanism. He wants to win every tackle, every 5-a-side, every contest he’s in, which is pretty unique in a footballer. I shouldn’t really say it, but it’s that Roy Keane-esque type of ‘nastiness’. He’s a nice kid, but not so much of a nice kid when he’s got his boots on and is on the pitch.”
At only 17, Rigg remains in the teeth-cutting phase of his career, however, since being handed his debut for the club as a 15-year-old, he has gone on to make 30 appearances for the club, which includes featuring regularly for Regis Le Bris’ side this season.
Chris Rigg is a talent who has been making waves at the youth level for a while, however, he is now delivering on his early promise in the Championship, with HITC suggesting Scouts working with two of Europe’s biggest clubs claim Rigg to be the best young English player since Jude Bellingham.
Liverpool has a rich history of recruiting fine young talent from across the globe, with the recent acquisition of Rio Ngumoha from Chelsea being regarded as a fantastic business.
The youngster committed his future to Sunderland for this season, at least, however, it is likely only a matter of time before he moves on to bigger things. Liverpool remains watching, aware, and ready to pounce when the time is right.
