Liverpool are yet to make their first signing of the summer in what is becoming a running joke outside of Anfield. Arne Slot is decisively working with the squad that he inherited from his predecessor Jurgen Klopp which by no means is bad on paper.
There are areas in the squad that need reinforcement but the goalkeeping position is not one of them. Alisson Becker is as good as they come in the Premier League and will hope to continue his good form under the Dutch coach.
In Caoimhin Kelleher, Liverpool have the best number two in the Premier League. The Irishman should be a starting goalkeeper considering how good he has been when given a chance. Unfortunately for him, he has Alisson ahead at the moment.
Yet, it looks like the Reds are ready to sign another goalkeeper. As per reliable Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have now scheduled another round of talks to sign Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia.
The 23-year-old’s exploits for a struggling La Liga side and his nation has caught the eye. He received immense praise for the performances he put in at the Euros 2024. Mamardashvili was key in Georgia’s run to the Round of 16.
Liverpool are looking to sign the Valencia goalkeeper not for the present but with an eye on the future. The plan is to sign the player this summer taking advantage of the Spanish club’s situation and loaning him back to Valencia.
Alisson is 31 years of age and isn’t going to be around forever. Kelleher on the other hand might soon want to move to a different club where he will be a guaranteed starter. Liverpool have already started planning for life after the duo.
Mamardashvili is at that interesting stage of his career where he is not good enough to be the first-choice goalkeeper for a club of Liverpool’s stature but too good to be their second-choice. Loaning him out is a wise decision and let’s see if the Reds pull this deal off this summer.
