The honeymoon period seems to be over for Jurgen Klopp after a disastrous 3-0 defeat against Watford that left Liverpool winless in the last three matches, vanishing the little hope of a title challenge in the process. The Reds have failed to maintain the momentum and followed up great results against top teams like Chelsea and Manchester City with disastrous defeats against teams who appear far easier on paper.
The former Borussia Dortmund manager, though, seems set to receive substantial backing in the January transfer window to overhaul the squad to his liking.
Liverpool have reportedly identified numerous transfer targets to bring in January.
1Ilkay Gundogan
Jurgen Klopp transformed the German midfielder into one of the best players in Bundesliga. The German has resisted the option of switching the club despite interest from several top clubs like Manchester City in recent times, but the temptation to link up with Klopp once again may play a decisive role in his future decisions.
Despite the ever present transfer rumours, Gundogan has been an important part of the Dortmund team. He was a key member of the Dortmund team that won the league titles under Klopp.
Although Tuchel has done remarkably well to take the club to the second spot this season, they still are separated by a staggering eight points from table leaders Bayern Munich.
Gundogan would represent a significant improvement over some of Liverpool’s existing defensive midfielders like Lucas whom the club may consider selling given that the Brazilian is fast approaching 30, and his transfer value would plummet in future.
Liverpool, though, are not the only club interested in the 25-year-old. Juventus have openly expressed their interest in the midfielder. The opportunity to join the reigning Italian champions coupled with Champions League football next season will be tempting indeed.
“Gundogan and Banega? I can rule out a move for them, and the same goes for Lavezzi,” said Juventus director Beppe Marotta
2Martin Caceres
The Uruguayan defender is a real alternative for Liverpool but at no extra cost to the club. His current contract is scheduled to expire this summer, and Juventus are highly unlikely to extend the deal. The 28-year-old is facing issues with Manager Massimiliano Allegri on disciplinary matters, but working with a manager like Klopp coupled with a change in the scenario could bring out the best from the spoiled star.
3Jeison Murillo
The Inter Milan defender has been a key reason for Roberto Mancini’s team rising to the top of the Italian Serie A. He will reportedly cost £22 million, but Klopp needs a top defender not just in the immediate future.
Even though Liverpool will be able to guarantee him first-team football, the competition from Real Madrid and Barcelona would be intense.
