French forward Anthony Martial has wrapped up his switch to Premier League club Manchester United from Monaco on a four-year contract for a fee of £36million – the highest fee paid for a youngster in football history.
The French under 21 international flew to Manchester yesterday to undergo the medical and completion of paperwork before the Red Devils officially announced the signing of 19-year-old on the deadline day. Martial will wear the No 9 shirt.
Martial began his football career at Lyon and then transferred to Monaco in 2013 for a fee of €6 million. During his stay at the Louis II Stadium, the 19-year-old established himself as a regular player, scoring 11 goals in 49 appearances. Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal is impressed by the teenager for his talent and multi-functional skills.
“Anthony is a naturally talented, young, multi-functional forward with great potential. We have been watching him for a while now and he has developed immensely during his time at AS Monaco.” Van Gaal said.
“I am delighted he has joined Manchester United as I believe this is the right club for him to continue his development as a young player. He has all the attributes to become a top football player; however we need to give him time to adjust to his new environment and the rhythm of the Premier League.”
Martial has represented his country at all levels. Currently, he is a member of France U21 team.
