Manchester United are plotting a sensational swoop for Barcelona star Neymar, according to the Sun.

The Red Devils’ boss Louis Van Gaal is resolute to add new forward options to his squad ahead of the closure of summer transfer window on September 1 and the English newspaper has left the footballing world stunned by claiming that the Dutchman is considering an audacious move for Barca’s no.11.

United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was supposed to be in Barcelona last week to complete a deal for Pedro, but The Sun understands that he was there to hold secret talks in an attempt to secure the services of Brazil international.

Neymar enjoyed an impressive last season at Camp Nou, having scored 39 goals in 51 appearances as Barcelona won the domestic league and cup and European Cup to become the first club in history to achieve a treble twice.

Overall, the Brazilian has scored 31 goals in 59 appearances since joining the Catalans from his hometown club Santos in 2013.

Neymar has three left years left on his contract with Barcelona, which features a buyout clause of £137.8million.
