Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has on Monday provided an update on the fitness situation in his squad. This comes as the Gunners prepare to turn their attentions back towards matters on the continent, on Tuesday night.
Arsenal are for their part fresh off securing a return to winning ways in the Premier League over the weekend. After surrendering a two-goal advantage in a home meeting with Leicester City, a pair of injury-time goals on the part of Leandro Trossard and Kai Havertz ensured that the capital giants kept pace with Manchester City in 2nd in the English top-flight, a point adrift of leaders Liverpool.
En route to as much, however, Arsenal were dealt a fresh blow on the personnel front. This came late in proceedings at The Emirates, upon Riccardo Calafiori going to ground with an issue whilst celebrating teammate Trossard’s go-ahead goal.
Speaking to the media in anticipation of his side’s highly-anticipated showdown with Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, Mikel Arteta, this afternoon, was therefore asked for an update on defender Calafiori’s wellbeing.
And, as cited by Fabrizio Romano, the Spanish tactician went on to explain:
‘“Calafiori? We’ll see how he feels today. He was a bit emotional after the game.”
From here, attentions turned towards a pair of Arsenal stars to have missed out completely at the weekend. The north Londoners currently find themselves without the services of midfield pair Martin Odgaard and Mikel Merino, owing to respective injury concerns.
And, if the latest comments on the part of Arsenal’s headmaster are anything to go by, it appears altogether unlikely that either will be available to face PSG:
“We’re not expecting any player to return in the next 24/48h.”
Arteta and co. head into Tuesday’s Champions League return in search of a first victory of the club’s European campaign, after being held to a goalless stalemate by Serie A outfit Atalanta two weeks ago.
