Since joining Manchester City from River Plate for a modest fee of £14 million in 2022, Julian Alvarez has rapidly ascended to prominence, playing a crucial role in Manchester City’s domestic and international success. Over the course of two seasons, the Argentine forward contributed to City’s Premier League titles and their triumphant Champions League campaign, while also helping Argentina achieve World Cup and Copa America glory.
City and Julian Alvarez might have been together only for two years, but the Argentine has enjoyed a fruitful spell at the Etihad, winning all major silverware at the age of just 24. However, he was largely used as the understudy of Erling Haaland and was the supporting act for the prolific Norwegian more often than not.
It thus comes as no surprise that Alvarez sought a way out, moving elsewhere to play a leading role. Atletico Madrid can give him just such a platform. Despite parting ways with City, Alvarez has left a lasting impression on Pep Guardiola.
Speaking ahead of the FA Community Shield against Manchester United, Pep Guardiola expressed his admiration for the significant impact Julián Álvarez has had during his time at Manchester City. As per Fabrizio Romano via X, the City boss congratulated the 24-year-old for joining another big club and thanked him for the role played in City’s success over the last two seasons.
“He wants to leave and Atlético is a top club, so it’s ok. Good luck to Juli, we loved him, we won everything. I really wish him all the best”
Despite his impressive record of 36 goals in 103 appearances for the club, Álvarez has often found himself overshadowed by Erling Haaland. While the Norwegian was undoubtedly the first choice, having Alvarez on the bench afforded City options and a get-out-of-jail card when in need of a goal.
Replacing the Argentine will be no easy task, and Guardiola admits the club is yet to take a decision on the matter, as relayed by Fabrizio Romano via X. Given that City will once again be expected to compete for major honours across all fronts, going into the season with just Haaland as the senior striking option is risky business.
City have decisions to make and have mere weeks before the summer transfer window slams shut. As far as Alvarez and Guardiola are concerned, there does not appear to be any bad blood there. An illustrious chapter has closed for the player, and he will hope an equally glorious one awaits in the Spanish capital.
