Pogba – Is He Worth the Trouble?

Date:

The Paul Pogba saga seems to be never ending. The question of who he will sign for continues to buzz around the world’s news outlets as well as on various social media platforms as fans speculate. Yesterday, it looked like Real Madrid were back in the race, though it appears today that United are still the favourites for his signature.

If he does end up back in Manchester, he will be returning to a club that he has described as being his “first family”. Many in the game have questioned the merits of the huge sum of money that is being quoted for the French starlet. He certainly does not have the blistering pace and obvious athleticism possessed by the likes of Ronaldo or Bale, nor does he score 40-50 goals a season.

Is that what you would expect from somebody that will be the most expensive footballer in the world?

Pogba certainly is a world class player, and one of the standout performers in Serie A last season. He did score a few memorable goals but is by no means an accomplished goal scorer, nor does he contribute with bucket loads of assists.

The question then, is whether or not Paul Pogba is overrated? He asked for a lot of money when he was at Old Trafford in his first stint despite not having played for the first team, and that was one of the reasons behind him moving on to Juventus originally.

Gary Lineker sparked outrage with his view during the European Championships that Pogba remains short of being a world-class player, but of course also had some people agreeing with him, which highlights the vast difference of opinion being held by this star player.

The man that discovered this immense talent, Mohamed Chacha, however, believes Pogba still has so much to offer and signing for United would improve him as a player. In an interview with La Gazzetta, he goes on to say

He’s only 23 years old and has room to grow. To train with great players and with a great coach will always make you better. We have yet to see his peak.”

Returning to Old Trafford under the guidance of Jose Mourinho could well be perfect timing for Pogba and also for Manchester United. United are not in the Champions League yet are in pole position to sign the most coveted player in the world and one that will become the most expensive player in the world. That is a huge statement from both the player and the club to have faith in each other.

What happens next will define the season even before it has started, and Pogba will require some outstanding performances wherever he ends up to justify what looks set to be the highest transfer fee of all time.

  1. I am skeptic, but he is a talented player. No doubt about that. I wish the managerial team can make better forecasting, so that these things don’t happen in the future. I see this lining up to happen again with Adnan Januzaj.
