Could Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 overtake the FIFA series?

Football fans have certain dates marked in their calendars throughout the year, and for many that extends to video games as well. The FIFA franchise has been the dominant product in this genre for many years, but there are many intriguing new elements that will arrive from the competing Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 in August.

Developed by Konami, PES dates back to the 1990s and has consistently offered a unique alternative to FIFA during the past few years. Powered by the Fox Engine, the new edition will again provide incredible graphics and outstanding gameplay controls.

It is the one area where many are in agreement when comparing the two video games, and it is exactly where PES 2019 seems to be placing the focus on this summer. From weather elements to a sharp grasp on the types of shots from players, PES will give gamers a perspective unlike any other.

The latest version has now produced several new moves that will be available, including no-look passes and enhanced dribbling abilities on the ball. Updates and upgrades have been added to the “myClub” career mode, with a particular excitement set for the legends of PES 2019.

A jaw-dropping list of players can be used, and the names are certainly impressive. PES 2019 will have Johan Cruyff, Lothar Matthäus, Paolo Maldini, Roberto Carlos, Diego Maradona, David Beckham and many others. Free-kicks with Beckham, unstoppable skill on the ball with Cruyff and the magnificent pace of Maradona will all be some things to look forward to for gamers.

Defeating the challenge

The toughest obstacle for Konami to overcome with PES 2019 is the aspect that has hurt them the most, and that is with their licensing agreements. August’s release will see their greatest collection yet of licensed leagues and stadiums, providing a more realistic experience in terms of names and teams.

Argentina’s Primera Division, Brazil’s Serie A and Chile’s Primera Division are present, providing several exciting South American sides. In Europe, France’s Ligue 1, the Dutch Eredivisie and the Scottish Premiership are included. The top flights in Russia, Portugal, Switzerland and Denmark will also be available.

While the Premier League and La Liga will not be fully represented, clubs such as Barcelona and Liverpool are in the game. These additions are crucial for PES 2019, as one of its best features will no longer be a playable option.

For the past ten years, Konami have had the full UEFA license, which has now been secured by EA Sports for FIFA. This license allowed fans to experience the Champions League, Europa League and Super Cup, all with the official graphics and music (the Champions League anthem was always a joy to hear).

Now without that fantastic piece, Konami must ensure that they can grab attention in a different way. The best strategy to make that happen will be with the actual gameplay, which has always been a strength. If that can be further improved, PES 2019 has a chance to be something special.

EA Sports’ FIFA continues to dominate in virtual football, and FIFA 19 will undoubtedly sell more copies than Pro Evolution Soccer 2019. However, Konami might have created the superior gaming experience, and I think it will be worth a strong look in August.
