Defender Phil Jones is set to make a comeback to Manchester United’s line-up for the Wednesday’s League Cup tie against Ipswich Town.

The Red Devils boss Louis Van Gaal confirmed on Tuesday that the England international will start on the bench in the game.

Jones has not made any competitive appearance this season due to a blood clot in his leg he suffered just before the start of the season. The defender returned to full training last week.

In his absence, Daley Blind has often got rod at center-back along with Chris Smalling.

Center-backs Marcos Rojo and Paddy McNair have been ruled out of the third-round game after suffering injuries in Sunday’s 3-2 Premier League win over Southampton, which has forced United boss to rush Jones back early.

Left-back Luke Shaw is already out of the entire season after suffering a double leg break in 2-1 Champions League defeat to PSV Eindhoven on September 15.

“Rojo has a hamstring injury and Paddy McNair has a minor injury. I have to admit that because of the injury of three defenders, I shall have Jones on the bench but he is not fit,” the Dutchman told MUTV.

The Red Devils had last met Ipswich in a competitive game in 2002.
