Romano gives the ‘here we go’ as Tottenham star once likened to Zidane joins Ligue 1 club

Date:

Tottenham Hotspur are undergoing a project revamp under Ange Postecoglou. The North London club has already brought in a few players this summer like Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall. However, with arrivals, departures need to follow.

Having brought in two youngsters for the midfield, it was obvious that the club would be looking to let one of the existing names in the position leave. Having fallen out of favor with Ange Postecoglou last season, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was an obvious possibility.

The 28-year-old Dane has been a great servant to the North London club. Having joined Spurs in 2020 under Jose Mourinho, Hojbjerg had an excellent few seasons at the club before Ange arrived at Hotspur Way.

The 81-cap Danish international has made 184 appearances for Tottenham so far across all competitions (the most in his career), scoring 10 goals and providing 16 assists. That seems to be the final total though, as the player is on his way out.

According to renowned Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Hojbjerg is on his way to Olympique Marseille in the Ligue 1 where he will be playing under ex-Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi. The Italian tactician is building an impressive project at the French club.

Jose Mourinho, the ex-Tottenham boss was a huge fan of the industrious midfielder. The ‘Special One’ once joking likened the 28-year-old to Zidane for a skill he performed on the pitch. However, Hojbjerg is a very different player.

At 28, Hojbjerg might be immensely experienced but he is just entering his prime years as a footballer. The ex-Bayern Munich midfielder needs to be a regular starter and that was unlikely to happen at the N17.

It is still unclear as to why the Aussie tactician didn’t favor Hojbjerg for a starting role in his team. Maybe, the ex-Celtic boss wanted a more creative presence in his midfield, something that the Dane is not blessed with.

Spurs will receive €13.5/14m by selling the 28-year-old. These funds will help the club reinvest in another position in the transfer market. Right now, it’s time to bid adieu to Hojbjerg, albeit with a heavy heart. Let’s wait and see how his career pans out from here.
