Tottenham Hotspur had been heavily linked with a move for Rennes wonderkid Desire Doue over the past month but things have cooled down in the past few days with Bayern Munich and PSG leapfrogging them in the race.
The 19-year-old has a contract with the French club that runs out in 2026, making this summer the only time Rennes can get a solid fee for his exit. This has prompted top European clubs to try and snap him up.
Tottenham have already been active in the transfer window so far, signing youngsters like Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray. The latter has already impressed in pre-season under Ange Postecoglou but Spurs are not done in the transfer market.
However, despite the club emerging as an excellent prospect for high-potential youngsters, Desire Doue doesn’t seem to be like one of those who will come to the N17. The Ligue 1 ace has high-profile offers from the likes of Bayern Munich and PSG.
As per Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Bayern have sent a new official bid to Rennes for the teenager after their initial proposal was rejected 10 days ago. The journalist adds that PSG are expected to bid again as well.
Transfermarkt values the player at around €30m. However, Bayern have made a bid worth around €50m with add-ons. Rennes stand to make a footfall from this deal. PSG are likely to match if not bid over this figure.
Doue has yet to decide which club he wants to join. Being French, he might be tempted by the PSG opportunity should the club make an offer. Tottenham might be missing out on an exceptional talent but the club has an exciting project on their hands.
Ange Postecoglou has found a way to convince young, high-potential youngsters to make the N17 their career choice. One swallow doesn’t make a summer and it’s time for Tottenham to focus on other targets.
