Manchester United’s performances this season have been below par, especially considering the wave of optimism that surrounded the club going into the 2019/20 Premier League campaign.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, despite having had a full summer to sign his preferred players, and implement his tactical philosophy before the season began, has fallen short of expectations and thrown Manchester United fans into deep thought over his competency at the helm of the Red Devils.
Manchester United currently sit in 9th-place on the Premier League table, and are closer to the relegation zone than they are to the top of the table, which, in itself, speaks volumes of how bad United’s season has been so far.
Solskjaer’s side has only managed to pick up eight points from a possible 15 over their last five games, with their most recent result being a 3-3 draw against Sheffield United, a game which could’ve easily gone Sheffield’s way had United not made a comeback late into the game.
The mere fact that United had to rely on a spirited comeback to even secure a draw against Sheffield just goes to show how badly Manchester United are playing this season.
Going into the January transfer window, it might be wise for United to appoint a new manager, but should that new manager be Mauricio Pochettino?
Despite Tottenham’s poor form this season, Pochettino’s sacking came as a huge surprise to Premier League neutrals and Tottenham supporters alike, considering the fact that the Argentine tactician had, over the past few years, put Spurs on a streak of perpetual growth which was exemplified by their place in the Champions League final last season.
Pochettino, at the moment, is probably the world’s hottest free agent and has already reportedly attracted the interest of a host of clubs, including German powerhouse Bayern Munich, who for the first time in seven years, may not win the Bundesliga title.
Pochettino’s time at Tottenham involved him placing a strong focus on the development of young talent, which led to the incredible development of the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli.
The Argentine tactician never really had a transfer budget big enough to make the massive signings the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and even Arsenal have been able to make in recent years.
As a result, Pochettino’s Tottenham had an invisible ceiling placed above them, which could only be broken by investing in a couple of world-class players who are capable of taking Spurs to the next level.
At Manchester United, Pochettino would have enough funds to make important signings, whilst also making use of his player-management skills to help develop the likes of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Daniel James into consistent world-class players.
With their full financial backing, Pochettino could be the man to take Manchester United back to the pinnacle of English Football.
Should Manchester United relieve Ole Gunnar Solskjaer of his duties anytime soon, Mauricio Pochettino would undoubtedly be the best person to replace him at Old Trafford.
