Should Sergio Romero Leave MUFC?

Date:

Manchester United ended their 2019/20 season on a disastrous note after they failed to progress towards Europa League finals. Although the club sealed the Champions League spot by virtue of the third position in the Premier League, Manchester United failed in three semifinals. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer managed side faltered in Carabao Cup, FA Cup, and Europa League semifinals because of their faults. Particularly, Red Devils lost the FA Cup semifinals owing to David de Gea’s horrendous errors. The cumbersome performances of the goalkeeper have not only put him in the spotlight, but also it has highlighted the Sergio Romero issue.

Against Sevilla, Manchester United bottled the semifinals due to their horrendous man-marking. However, it is not the major talking point. For the semifinals, Red Devils made two changes. Though Lindelöf for Bailly seemed sensible, David de Gea for Sergio Romero has raised the questions. Though de Gea’s deputy has done a commendable job in the 2019/20 season, the player is being dropped just before the semifinals. Even the same happened in FA Cup semifinals where Romero was dropped for the Spanish shot-stopper.

Louis van Gaal signed Sergio Romero on a free transfer when David de Gea had almost joined Real Madrid. However, the infamous “fax-machine” failure resulted in de Gea’s extended stay at Old Trafford. The failed transfer resulted in Sergio Romero being the deputy of Spanish numero uno. Despite the things being adverse for the Argentinian shot-stopper, he has been the finest deputy in the Premier League. In 61 appearances, Romero has 39 clean sheets and has conceded just 27 goals. Though the stats look impressive, the player has only seven Premier League games in his five-year stay at Old Trafford.

Why Sergio Romero should move out?

Barring the impressive stats of Romero, the cryptic message from Dean Henderson after bidding farewell to Sheffield United has raised the questions on Romero’s future. The Old Trafford faithful have insisted the club continue with Dean Henderson because of his excellent performances for Blades. Henderson had 13 clean sheets in 36 appearances which one more than David de Gea in Premier League. However, it is the poor display in front of the goal of de Gea which has been a major concern for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

On the other hand, if Dean Henderson doesn’t go on loan to other clubs, Sergio Romero will automatically become the third choice shot-stopper. For a player of his caliber, it doesn’t suit well. With the lack of game time in England, the player has become the second choice for Argentina’s national side. As he is already 33, the national team chances would further deteriorate if he becomes the third-choice goalkeeper.

It is always the game time that keeps the player happy. Though Romero hasn’t shown any discontent. He has responded to his critics whenever there were concerns raised. Clubs like Leeds United and Everton are waiting in the offing to sign the Argentinian goalkeeper who has just one year left in the contract.

Though the player has played very few games, there is no doubt that Romero will go down as one of the finest deputy shot-stoppers in Manchester United history. It would be fruitful for both the parties if Sergio Romero moves out of Old Trafford. Should Red Devils use the player as a makeweight in any transfer deal? Comment down below.
