2017 has come to an end, and in terms of football, it gave us one of the most exciting calendar years ever. We saw football of the highest order showcased on the grandest of stages by the world’s best teams. Individually, we also saw the likes of Harry Kane, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi excel in terms of goalscoring and all-round team influence. But for all the good we saw, the bad was just as prominent.
Here are the four worst team performances of 2017.
4Liverpool 4-0 Arsenal: August 27th, 2017.
Every season we see Arsenal fans go through tumultuous summers of rumours and speculation about incoming players. The summer of 2017 was no different as Arsenal fans were led to believe that they were signing Edinson Cavani, Kylian Mbappé, Thomas Lemar & Karim Benzema last summer, they signed none. With all that said, they entered the new season severely underprepared and were duly punished for their sins.
Liverpool were electrifying while the Gunners barely resembled a team capable of showing life. A 4-0 hammering on the first day of the season is bad, and it’s worse when you consider the fact the Reds missed several other chances in the game. On top of all that, Arsène Wenger left star signing Alexandre Lacazette on the bench. Not a good way to show the Gunners faithful that the new season would be any different from the previous campaigns.
