2017 has come to an end, and in terms of football, it gave us one of the most exciting calendar years ever. We saw football of the highest order showcased on the grandest of stages by the world’s best teams. Individually, we also saw the likes of Harry Kane, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi excel in terms of goalscoring and all-round team influence. But for all the good we saw, the bad was just as prominent.
Here are the four worst team performances of 2017.
2Arsenal 1-5 Bayern Munich: March 7th, 2017.
Water is wet, the sky is blue, and Arsenal get knocked out of the round of 16 stage for the seventh successive season. In the past three meetings between these two sides, the Gunners have lost 5-1 on each occasion. Two 5-1 results in two legs made it the worst aggregate defeat suffered by an English team in the knockout stage. It was embarrassing, humiliating and not befitting of a club at the level of Arsenal.
Despite taking the lead through a Theo Walcott strike, the Gunners capitulated as soon as their captain Koscielny was sent off. It became so bad that you could almost see the apathy on Bayern’s players faces as they scored their goals. This performance was so bad that it ranks in the top 3 worst performances of any team in Champions League history.
