Man City vs Stoke City 2017

2017 has come to an end, and in terms of football, it gave us one of the most exciting calendar years ever. We saw football of the highest order showcased on the grandest of stages by the world’s best teams. Individually, we also saw the likes of Harry Kane, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi excel in terms of goalscoring and all-round team influence. But for all the good we saw, the bad was just as prominent.

Here are the four worst team performances of 2017.

1Barcelona 6-1 Paris Saint-Germain: March 8th, 2017.

Barcelona vs Juventus-possession

After dismantling Lionel Messi & Co. at the Parc de Princes, Paris Saint-Germain could be forgiven for thinking their job was all but over. But such was their naivety that they became the first team in Champions League history to suffer an overturned 4-goal deficit.

Ironically the miraculous comeback was orchestrated by, now PSG player, Neymar. The Brazilian had a coming of age performance that night, showing the world why he’s destined to be more than Lionel Messi’s supporting act. On the night he scored 2 goals and provided an assist, but as good as he was, PSG basically let him run havoc. This will undoubtedly go down as the worst night in Unai Emery’s managerial career, as he oversaw a shambolic collapse by a supposedly elite club.

Not only did they get thrashed at the Nou Camp, but they also lost their dignity and self-respect with the scoreline. The defeat sent their season into a downward spiral as they lost out on Ligue 1 by one point to AS Monaco.
