The current summer transfer window has been very eventful for Real Madrid. The Merengues finally brought their long-term target, Kylian Mbappe, to their team this summer. On the other hand, they also saw two very beloved players leave, i.e., Toni Kroos and Nacho Fernandez.
Los Blancos also had to face a significant failure in this window, as they could not land their primary defensive target, Leny Yoro. The French defender joined Manchester United even though his priority was Real Madrid, mainly because the European champions had offered a significantly lower fee to Lille than the Red Devils.
The failure to land Yoro and the departure of Nacho leaves the Vikings with a clear weakness in the center of the defense. This is especially the case as Alaba is still recovering from his ACL injury, and might not be able to get back on the pitch till 2025.
Thus, there was speculation that Real Madrid might sign another defender in the current market. However, as the journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported, Carlo Ancelotti has ruled out signing any defender, or any other player, this summer.
The Italian tactician made it clear that there will be no more changes in the Real Madrid squad this summer:
“No. The squad is closed, we will NOT sign anyone. Vallejo is back, Alaba is recovering, and we are evaluating our academy players. I think there won’t be departures… no one wants to leave. We’ve a spectacular squad.”
There is no doubt that the team’s defense is a bit fragile with Nacho’s departure. However, as Ancelotti has confirmed, there will be no more changes. Hopefully, the team will be able to cope with the schedule till Alaba returns from his injury. Furthermore, this situation can also provide the youngsters with an opportunity to get some minutes with the first team.
