Liverpool have decided to allow their long-serving midfielder Lucas Leiva to leave after he fell out of favour with manager Brendan Rodgers, according to ESPN FC.

The 28-year-old Brazil international’s future at the Anfield is the subject to intense speculation after he was left out of the Liverpool squad that travelled to Stoke on Sunday to begin their Premier League 2015-16 campaign and won the game 1-0.

And ESPN FC, citing sources, has claimed that the Liverpool are set to pay heed to offers of around £8 million for him.

The outlet believes that Leiva has dropped to fifth in the pecking order following a massive reshuffle of the squad by Rodgers this summer.

In the season-opener, the Liverpool boss handed starts to new signing James Milner and Captain Jordan Henderson and brought in Emre Can as a substitute in the second-half.

Joe Allen is understood to be ahead of Lucas in the selection order, but a hamstring injury had ruled him out for the first month of the season.

Leiva joined Liverpool from Brazilian club Gremio for £5 million in 2007 and has made 275 appearances in eight seasons at Anfield.

The Brazilian has two years remaining on his current contract with Liverpool but he knows that his first-team chances will be very limited if he stays and he will have to find a new club to secure regular football.

He is said to be linked with a move to Inter Milan, who also showed interest in signing him in January but were told that he was not for sale.
