Why Chelsea Shouldn’t Sign Kai Havertz

After Jadon Sancho, Kai Havertz has been the most sought-after player in the Bundesliga. The German wonderkid has been in scintillating form, form that has attracted suitors from all over Europe. Bayern Munich, Chelsea, and PSG have all expressed an interest in the 21-year-old. His 17 goals and 8 assists in 43 games have caught everyone’s attention, making him a top priority for the summer.

In recent weeks, the Blues have intensified their chase of Havertz, looking to add him to the already confirmed Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech. On paper, any signing sounds exciting, but Chelsea would be smart to spend their resources elsewhere.

Here’s why Chelsea shouldn’t sign Kai Havertz

Extortionate Price Tag

Kai Havertz
Kai Havertz is a winger that can also play upfront

It’s being reported that Bayern Leverkusen are demanding a fee close to £89.5million for Kai Havertz, a price tag that suggests he’s one of the best talents in the world, which he’s not. Like we mentioned earlier, Havertz has scored 17 goals and provided 8 assists in 43 games, that equates to a goal every 1.72 games.

When you compare that to Jadon Sancho, it’s a different a ball game. The Englishman has directly contributed to 38 goals in 44 games equating to a goal every 1.15 games. That’s a massive difference in both productivity and influence on games. If Dortmund are asking for no less than £100m for Sancho, then Havertz is not worth more than £60million. Although Roman Abramovich has shown he’s willing to spend big this summer, this is not a fee he needs to fork out.

Not Needed

Hudson-Odoi

This summer, Chelsea have already splashed out £53m on Timo Werner, a signing they desperately needed to strengthen their centre forward options. Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud are not of the required quality to fire the Blues to where they want to be – Werner solves that problem.

The signing of Kai Havertz makes less sense. Predominantly a winger, the 21-year-old would be competing with the likes of Calum Hudson-Odoi & Cristian Pulisic for the wide forward spots. Two players who are more naturally talented than the 21-year-old and are already acclimatised the physicality and pace of the Premier League.

Havertz is a decent player but considering the strength in depth Chelsea have on the flanks, he’s not worth it. Signing him for a sizeable transfer fee would mean Frank would also have the conundrum of managing each of his winger’s ego, as they’d all need suitable playing time. Playing time that may come at the expense of the team.

Other Areas in the Squad

Rudiger
Chelsea concede 8.6 shots per game.

This season, Chelsea have proved that attacking wise, they’re ready to compete with anyone. However, defensively they have been an absolute shambles. Chelsea have conceded the most goals out of anyone in the top 8 this season, including Arsenal. Frank Lampard’s men are leaking goals for fun and funds must be channelled into giving his team a sturdy defence.

The £89.5million that Leverkusen wants for Havertz, can be used to sign one centre-back to pair Kurt Zouma and a left-back to replace the outgoing Marcos Alonso. All I’m saying is, the Kai Havertz transfer looks nice on paper but, it’s not what Chelsea need right now.
